President's Message - Roberta L. Whitney
It only seems like a few months ago that I was welcoming you back to another school year, yet here we are at the end of it. We have faced many challenges, opportunities, and concerns this past year, and they will continue in the near future. Some of us may be going to new schools and/or programs, while others may be facing the prospect of not having a position next year.
We need to stay strong for one another until the legislature passes and the governor signs a budget for the next two years. Please keep reading legislative alerts, following the nacteonline.org web site, and contacting state legislatures so they know we are still aware of what is happening and we are not going to go away. Now more than ever, we need to be an active member in our state and national organizations. They keep us informed of legislative news and give us the opportunity to keep current by providing professional development opportunities.
Vida Bierria, Stacy Byrne, and I were able to attend the NBEA Conference in New Orleans during spring break. The three of us attended workshops and general sessions; met with various vendors, and networked with colleagues from across the country. During the evening hours, the three of us were able to sample New Orleans cuisine and hospitality, and see the sights and sounds. The NBEA Conference is one of the best to attend for business and marketing teachers. Next year’s conference is in Boston, also during spring break.
The annual NVBEA/NACTE Business and Marketing Division meeting will take place on July 27, 2011 in Lake Tahoe during the NACTE conference. CTE has sent notices to paid members of NACTE/ACTE in Clark County that they will pay for this conference. I hope many of you took advantage of this. In the other areas of the state, contact your CTE offices or administrators to see if funding is available. Let’s make this the largest conference attendance ever. We will have a representative from NBEA, guest speakers, and round tables in accounting/finance, marketing/entrepreneurship and computer applications for networking; in addition to our annual business meeting. If you haven’t thought about running for an officer’s position, consider it and have a friend nominate you from the floor. All officer positions are available. Also, since the association is trying to go green, we are recycling lanyards for badge holders. Look in that junk drawer where they are all in that big ball and send them to Jill Lambert at Silverado High School in Clark County or get them to one of your local NACTE officers.
As I finalize the agenda for the annual meeting, please contact me at rlwhitney@interact.ccsd.net, if you have any suggestions for agenda items. Congratulations to all who attended DECA and good luck to everyone attending FBLA Nationals in Orlando. We are proud of those of you who represent the State of Nevada. Have a great summer break and I hope to see many of you in July in Lake Tahoe.

SECTA FBLA Fourth Consecutive Sweepstakes Win
Southeast Career Technical Academy (SECTA) attended the 40th Annual Nevada Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership Conference from April 25-27, 2011 in Reno, Nevada. Over 550 members and advisors were at the conference, the largest in State history. Twenty-four members and three advisors from SECTA attended, and students competed in business leadership competitive events, participated in workshops and general sessions, and enjoyed networking with students from other schools. Overall SECTA FBLA came home with 12 first, 11 second, and 7 third place plaques, with every one of the 24 students placing in the top 10 and being called onto the stage to be recognized. Even students who did not attend the conference were recognized by National FBLA in the co-curricular Business Achievement Award area. There are four levels of achievement and 29 students received the first level Future Award, plus 4 others received the second level Business Award. The entire chapter was also recognized as being a Gold Seal Chapter, having the largest local membership, second largest state membership, and donating $1,200 to the March of Dimes. SECTA earned the most team points and was awarded the Sweepstakes Award for the fourth consecutive year. Congratulations to SECTA FBLA State Champions!
